This textbook was prepared with the aim of providing teaching materials for the Syntax course. This teaching material is designed for general use and can be used directly or by adapting as necessary to suit each teacher’s RPS. Learning materials and tasks are developed using the principles of the Communicative Approach to develop students’ competence in mastering language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Apart from that, integrative learning materials and tasks develop life skills in a broad sense and increase awareness of diversity.
The learning material and tasks in this textbook are organized into two learning cycles, namely the oral cycle and the written cycle. While the oral cycle develops listening and speaking skills, the written cycle develops reading and writing skills. In accordance with the principle of integration in language learning, the two cycles develop the four language skills in an integrated manner. Both the oral cycle and the written cycle consist of four types of learning activities, namely opening, exposure to the target language, explanation of linguistic elements, and practice communicating in the target language both guided and free. In addition, for enrichment and evaluation purposes, each unit is equipped with structured assignments in the form of homework and evaluation. To give participants the opportunity to educate themselves independently, a self-evaluation format is provided.
The material and activities in this textbook are further developed to encourage learning in students. Learning activities are developed to make students individually, in pairs and small groups actively learn English through activities to understand and use English to convey ideas and feelings naturally. Teachers act more as facilitators, givers of input, and encourage students to dare to express themselves without ignoring the level of language accuracy. With these learning activities and the role of lecturers, students are guided and facilitated in practicing expressing themselves so that gradually they are able to communicate well.
