How you use to comprehension skills in the classroom:

1. Focus on one reading/ thinking skill at a time.
2. Explain the purpose for doing the exercises and how this particular skill is important for effective reading.
3. Do an example or a sample exercise with the whole class. Model you thingking aloud as you do the exercise.
4. Put the students into pairs and assign one exercise for practice.
5. When the pairs have completed the exercise, discuss it with the wwhole class. Ask how the students arrived at their answers. Encourage friendly disagreement among pairs and in the class as a whole.
6. That day and in the next few classes, assign additional exercises which focus on the same skill, increasing the complexity of the tasks. Make sure the students work together whenever it is feasible.
7. Assign an exercise to be done by individual students, either in class or as homework, which they will use to check their own ability and confidence in using the skill.
8. Assign further exercises as needed, based on your sense of the students’ mastery of the skill.
